Shekar Veeraswamy

At the young age of ten, Shekhar found himself working in a store, diligently polishing silver lamps. His father toiled as a laborer, and his mother tended to their home, struggling to make ends meet and unable to support Shekhar's education. It was during this time that a friend introduced him to the Karnataka State Lawn Tennis Association (KSLTA), where he eagerly joined as a Ball Boy. Shekhar's fascination with the sport grew, marking the beginning of his remarkable journey—ascending from a Ball Boy to a Marker, and eventually becoming an Assistant Coach.

However, fate dealt Shekhar a cruel blow in 2005, when he was involved in a devastating motorcycle accident. The impact of another vehicle led to the amputation of his left leg, confining him to a hospital bed for six arduous months. Despite the challenges he faced, Shekhar's unwavering spirit refused to be defeated. KSLTA rehired him after his recovery, yet adjusting to life with an artificial limb presented a new reality he had to come to terms with.

It was during this tumultuous period that Shekhar's introduction to Wheelchair Tennis breathed new life into his traumatized state of mind. In 2010, he participated in his first Wheelchair Tennis tournament, stepping onto the court with wheels instead of legs. Although the sensation was foreign after years of playing with his natural limbs, Shekhar's passion for tennis remained unyielding. With his unwavering perseverance, he proudly holds the position of India's #2 ranked Wheelchair Tennis player today, showcasing his exceptional skills and dedication to the game.

Shekhar's journey is anchored by the unwavering support of his mother, wife, and two children, who serve as his driving force in pursuing his tennis career. Fuelled by boundless energy, this extraordinary individual can be spotted daily at 5 a.m. on the tennis courts of KSLTA, pouring his heart and soul into the game that has become both his profession and his passion.
